In 1996 voters in California passed Proposition 215 allowing for the production, possession and use of cannabis sativa L. for medical uses by individuals who have received amedical doctor’s recommendation for use of plant material and products derived therefrom. To this day California legislators have still not formalized a regulatory structure thatlicenses the cultivation, processing and distribution of products containing cannabis. This has wide-ranging implications in terms of what product types are made available and more importantly what possible methods for their production are used. Since our inception in 2010 we have offered analytical testing and quality control services to medicalcannabis patients, caretakers and dispensing Collectives. We have come to understand that a considerable number of products are contaminated with chemical residues,plant growth regulators and microbiological contaminants. This presentation will provide an overview of cannabis chemical constituents, the testing methodologies employed byour organization, offer some of the resulting insight gleaned in terms of contamination issues and our research in this area, particularly pesticide inhalation potential, and willconclude with our most current efforts profiling cannabis cultivars to aid patients in determining the best products for their ailments.

Dr. Jeffrey C. Raber received his B.S. in Biochemistry from Lebanon Valley College, PA and subsequently a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Southern Californiawith an emphasis on developing new synthetic methodologies. Dr. Raber studied plant phylogenetics of the RuBisCO enzyme while in college and was named tothe USA Today 1997 All-USA College Academic Team for his research accomplishments in this area. While at USC he was awarded the Harold and Lillian MoultonFellowship for his efforts on the construction of novel heterocycles and peptidomimetics utilizing a proprietary boron-based multicomponent condensation reaction. Sincegraduate school Dr. Raber has pursued numerous entrepreneurial endeavors highlighted by KinetiChem where he leads the development and commercialization of a novelcontinuous flow chemical reactor technology. Dr. Raber initially joined KinetiChem, as the Chief Chemist and quickly became the Vice President and eventually thePresident, also being elected to the company’s Board of Directors. Dr. Raber has numerous peer-reviewed publications, has lectured around the world and is an inventor ofmultiple patented technologies. Driven by a desire to make a positive contribution to society while creating American jobs, in 2010 Dr. Raber founded The Werc Shop,an independent laboratory focused on botanical analysis, product development and sustainability with an initial emphasis on serving the unmet public health and safetyneeds within the medical cannabis community. Dr. Raber’s background as an accomplished scientist, patented inventor and seasoned executive provide him with aunique perspective and skill set useful in assisting state and local regulators in the construction and implementation of effective solutions for the sustainable introduction ofmedical cannabis products to qualified patients.
