Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office:

On Friday, August 30, 2013, one of the three dogs abandoned on Samoa beach on 08/21/13 had to be euthanized.

“Becky”, the black Labrador Retriever who was seen chasing her owner’s vehicle on State Highway 255 after being abandoned in the Fairhaven area, was diagnosed with invasive nasal cancer after staff at the Humboldt County Animal Shelter found pools of blood in her kennel. The veterinarian determined that Becky was bleeding internally and would probably not survive through the weekend.

Veterinary records obtained by the Sheriff’s Animal Control Division from Temple City California indicate that Becky had been experiencing symptoms since at least May, 2012.

The other two dogs, “Angel” and “Ginger” are still at the shelter and are both doing fine. Angel is currently up for adoption. Ginger is in need of a foster home.

Veterinary costs for Becky were supplemented by the Friends for Life Emergency Medical Fund. Anyone wishing to donate money to this fund in memory of Becky or to help support the many shelter dogs that are saved every year through the use of the fund can send a donation to FFL EMF, P.O. box 962, Eureka CA, 95502 or at www.dogrescuers.org.
