UPDATE, 4:30 p.m.: From the California Highway Patrol:

On Thursday, September 5th, 2013, at approximately 10:30 a.m., 37 year old Shederick Lowell Atteberry of McKinleyville was driving a 1989 Freightliner semi-truck while pulling a dolly loaded of logs southbound on a private logging road in a rural portion of Humboldt County south of Ferndale.  As Mr. Atteberry negotiated a right curve in the roadway while merging onto Lowry Road, he lost control of his vehicle and the truck and trailer combination drove off the west roadway edge.  The truck and trailer combination overturned multiple times as they rolled down an embankment, causing the trailer to lose its load of logs.  The truck and trailer eventually came to rest towards the bottom of the embankment with Mr. Atteberry and his passenger, 20 year old Jonathan Russell Beck of Arcata, still inside the truck cab.  Mr. Atteberry exited the vehicle and climbed up to the roadway where he was eventually able to call 9-1-1.  Mr. Beck remained in the vehicle and was eventually extricated by emergency personnel.  Mr. Atteberry sustained minor injuries and Mr. Beck sustained major non-life threatening injuries as a result of this traffic collision.  Both occupants were transported by air ambulance to St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka.  Neither Mr. Atteberry nor Mr. Beck was wearing their seatbelts at the time of the collision and DUI is not believed to be a factor.

The California Highway Patrol would like to thank Cal Fire, Cal Star, and area volunteer fire departments for their prompt response and assistance with processing the collision scene and providing patient transport.  The CHP Humboldt Area office is investigating this traffic collision.
