According to California Highway Patrol spokesperson, Sgt. Tami McCanless, about 5:12 p.m. yesterday, an officer headed northbound on Broadway observed a 2013 red Chevy Camaro traveling southbound near Hilfiker Lane at approximately 65 mph and accelerating while in a 40 mph zone.
The officer, McCanless said, did not attempt pursuit but did turn around and follow at a safe speed. The officer came upon the vehicle which had crashed on 101 near the Herrick Ave offramp. The solo vehicle crash occurred when the driver hit the guard rail which protected a central pillar of the Herrick overhead.
The driver, Christopher Lockheart (age 26) of Eureka, was not injured. The officer detained him and placed him under arrest for reckless driving and being in possession of a switchblade.
