UPDATE, 7:10 p.m.: Press release from Humboldt Bay Fire:

On 5/7/14 at approximately 1209 hours, Humboldt Bay Fire was dispatched to a reported structure fire with flames visible at 1031 Fourth St. Humboldt Bay Fire responded with a first alarm assignment consisting of three fire engines, one ladder truck, and two Chief Officers.

First arriving units reported heavy brown and black smoke showing from a two story wood framed multi-family dwelling. Crews mounted an aggressive interior attack, but initially had difficulty locating the well advanced fire that had spread into void spaces between the walls and into the attic. Additionally upon arrival, units received reports of a possible occupant inside, but after searching the building crews were able to determine that no one was indeed inside.

Due to the building construction, advancement of the fire, and needs for additional personnel, a second alarm was struck bringing the remaining units from Humboldt Bay Fire as well as help from the Arcata Fire Protection District. During the fire, several other incidents were occurring within the HBF jurisdiction prompting a third alarm to be called to help facilitate coverage of HBF’s jurisdiction.

After approximately one and a half hours, crews were able to gain fire control. Crews remained on scene an additional hour and a half for overhaul, salvage, and investigation of the fire. A total of 26 Humboldt Bay Fire Personnel, as well as five engines and two ladder trucks were needed to control the incident.

No injuries to any civilians or fire personnel were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time, but is not believed to be suspicious in nature.
