This morning, people shopping at the Harris Street Safeway were treated to a tense police action in the parking lot. Says one Friend o’ the LoCO:
My coworker was there and was locked inside. They wouldn’t let him leave. He said there were 5 cop cars surrounding a car in the parking lot and that’s all he told me
Eureka Police Department spokesperson Brittany Powell fills us in. Powell said that at about 9:45 a.m., a woman on the 1600 block of C Street reported that her car had been stolen. For whatever reason, Sole Savers — the local used-car dealer — had a GPS tracking device on the car. This GPS device was able to track the stolen vehicle to the parking lot of the Safeway on the corner of Harris and Harrison.
Officers responded, Powell says, and detained three people in a high-risk traffic stop. One of those people — Marvin McQueen — was taken into custody. According to Powell, the car-thief victim said that McQueen was currently living with her, but did not have permission to use the car.
