Still need a flu vaccine, but not looking forward to a shot in the arm? The Public Health Clinic is taking appointments for FluMist flu vaccine nasal spray.

The Humboldt County Department of Health & Human Services’ Public Health Clinic recently received a shipment of the nasal spray vaccine.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that anyone over the age of 6 months old get a flu vaccine. The nasal spray is approved for use in people between the ages of 2 and 49 years old.

“FluMist is great for children and adults who dislike needles,” said Susan Wardrip R.N., the clinic’s immunization coordinator.

It takes up to two weeks after receiving the flu vaccine to achieve the best protection. Flu season in the U.S. can last from October through May. Public Health officials recommend getting the vaccine earlier in the season.

There is more you can do to prevent the spread of the flu in addition to getting a flu shot. Health officials recommend practicing the “3 Cs”: Clean your hands, cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough and contain your germs by staying home if you’re sick.
