In the second peninsula incident of the day (first here), the Samoa Peninsula Fire District — with assistance from Arcata Fire — responded to smoke coming from an outbuilding in Samoa. This one appeared less severe than the earlier blaze. Neighbors gawked as firefighters extinguished the flames.

Arcata Fire’s Jenny Williamson said this fire is thought to have been sparked by an errant cigarette, though she stressed that the cause is unconfirmed at this point. As of this writing, firefighters are clearing out the building.
