For months now we’ve heard through the Humboldt winds that VICE has been poking around our fair county hoping to learn the rules and players in the local cannabis game. About a month ago film crews with the growing media behemoth’s popular HBO news magazine show descended to get the skinny from industry-affiliated locals. HumCo patiently awaits its star turn.
But today we get another VICE glimpse at local marijuana politics. In the November issue of its print magazine, as well as online, comes “War in Weed Country,” a 7,000+ word look at how grows, mega and otherwise, are affecting Yurok Tribal members and, specifically, water supplies in areas near the Klamath River. Writer Sierra Crane-Murdoch embedded herself with the locals, visited a few grow sites and sat shotgun during Operation Yurok, all the while dragging photog Terray Sylvester along for the ride.
