Mother Ocean is especially bitchy today and, as a result, the local arm of the US National Weather Service warns today’s conditions could produce dreaded sneaker waves. The threat should lessen tonight as the swell diminishes. The following are some NWS approved tips for not dying in the big blue:
- Keep a respectful distance from the ocean.
- Avoid climbing rocks, jetties, outcroppings, etc.
- Avoid steeply sloped beaches.
- Never turn your back on the ocean.
To hammer home their point, the NWS posted the video below of some guy following virtually none of the aforementioned rules. Sigh:
Jetty Waves“Deadly Waves At Any Time” is printed on many signs on jetties along the Northwest California coast. This video makes it clear why jetties can be very dangerous. Respect the ocean! Never turn your back on it.The large waves in this video (on the North Jetty at the entrance of Humboldt Bay) developed after 10-15 minutes of much smaller waves.
