Press release from the Humboldt County Human Rights Commission:

The public is invited to a community listening forum on human rights, to be held on Thursday, October 15, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Healy Senior Center in Redway, 456 Briceland Rd. Sponsored by the Humboldt Human Rights Commission, this is the first of several listening forums planned over the next few months.

Now celebrating its 50th year of service, the fifteen-member Humboldt Human Rights Commission is an all-volunteer, independent board. Three members are appointed by each of the five county supervisors to serve four-year terms.

“We want to hear from the people living in southern Humboldt,” said Larry Miller, the commission’s longest-serving member. ”We haven’t had the opportunity to bring the commission to that area in some time. We are interested in concerns about human rights, and in any solutions the community has developed.”

Established in 1965, the commission’s responsibilities include investigating complaints of human rights violations and recommending possible remedies, educating the citizens of Humboldt County about human rights, co-sponsoring events and gathering information about human rights concerns and solutions in Humboldt.

“The commission has a long history of advocating for human rights in Humboldt County,” said Miller, chair of the ad hoc committee organizing this forum. “We’re looking forward to hearing from the community on the 15th.”

The forum is a special meeting of the Commission. Regular monthly meetings are held on the first Thursday, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., in Room 1A of the County Courthouse, 825 5th St., Eureka. The public is welcome to attend. For more information, leave contact information at 707-268-2548, and a commissioner will return your call.
