From the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office:
On 02-09-2016 at 6:00 p.m. a Deputy with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s office was on routine patrol on Highway 96 near downtown Hoopa. At this time the deputy noticed a blue, 1986, Chevrolet Suburban driving southbound on Highway 96.
The deputy recognized the vehicle as possibly being a vehicle that was stolen from a residential burglary in Hoopa on 01-21-2016. The deputy followed the vehicle and ran the vehicle’s license plate through their communications center. The deputy was informed by their communications center that the vehicle was reported stolen.
The deputy with assistance by a second deputy then conducted a felony car stop on the vehicle at Bair Road at Highway 96, Hoopa. The deputies detained (3) occupants of the vehicle at gun point. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Gabriel Farriel McCovey age 44 from Hoopa. Two other male passengers of the vehicle were detained and interviewed by the deputies. After being interviewed the two male passengers of the vehicle were released on scene without charges.
The deputies then arrested McCovey for possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of stolen property. A local tow truck company responded to the scene to store the vehicle until it could be released to the victim.
McCovey was transported to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility in Eureka and booked on the above charges. McCovey’s bail was set at $ 25,000.
