Donald Lent Boltzen passed away peacefully on January 4th, 2016 at 9pm in Fortuna Ca. He was a loving, kind man, and he will be missed by many.
He was born in Stockton on March 21, 1923, to Henry and Virginia Boltzen. Don was the oldest of three children. He attended Liberty Union High School in Brentwood. Graduating in 1941, he entered the Army, where he served from 1941 to 1943, and received an honorable discharge from being blind in one eye — he was blinded in that eye from a snowball as a child.
Upon coming home he entered college in Oakland, where he received a degree in accounting. After working awhile in this field he did not like being confined to an office. He owned a bar in Brentwood for a short time before he became a truck driver. He eventually found his calling as a building contractor. He had a love for designing and building custom homes.
He and his family moved to Humboldt County in 1974. Don became a building inspector for Humboldt County upon moving here. He worked as a building inspector for 22 years until he retired in 1997. During his time working as building inspector he and his wife Anna Boltzen owned and operated Bird City, where they bred and raised exotic birds that were shipped all over the United States. When Don retired from the county they sold the bird business and bought a motor home and traveled around the 48 states.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years Anna Boltzen and his son Douglas Boltzen.
