Vandals broke into McKinleyville High School early Thursday morning, causing damage to the school and uprooting several trees recently planted in the quad.
An employee with the school stated in a local Facebook community watch page that the damages are upwards of $8,000.
The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the scene after an alarm was set off on campus around 12:30 a.m. on Thursday. A community service officer later met with the assistant principal, who confirmed that the quad is completely surrounded by secured buildings.
HCSO Public Information Officer Selena Zorrilla-Mendoza told the Outpost that several juvenile suspects may have been spotted on surveillance cameras vandalizing the school.
The uprooted trees were planted in the quad three years ago as part of a beautification project by the Panther Partners Booster Club.
More information, and possibly security footage, will be available on Tuesday.
