Yesterday the Outpost received this letter from Peggy Friehauf, whose Eureka house burned earlier in the week.

Hello, this is the Friehauf family. We want to say thank you to everyone in this community that has stepped forward to help us in any way they can. The neighbors were especially gracious, giving us a leash for our dog, water, and slippers. To the fire department, we say a special thanks, for being so kind, and making sure we were okay at our lowest.

From Peggy, thank you to Battalion Chief Hulburt, for the professionalism and compassion. Him and his family of teammates did such a good job. Also, to Mad River OB Department for taking such good care of this family. Finally, thank you to everyone who we have yet to meet, and met through tragedy for coming forward and anonymously donating to us.

From Megan, thank you to William Reynolds. This chief especially touched my heart in a very special way. He was more than amazing. Thank you to my boyfriend, Austin Christian, his sister, and his 2 best friends Angelica and Zach. They went out of their way to take care of me in any way possible. And put their own money into my mom and I. A final thanks to all of my friends who have been worried sick, and have opened their homes to me.

To Humboldt Bay Fire and, Loleta, Arcata, Samoa, and from our clouded memories, possibly Petaluma for responding. Also to St. Joseph’s emergency medical team for taking good care of me, Megan, and making sure I was more than okay. Thank you to EPD for keeping people away, and leaving us undisturbed. And thanks to the reporters that were on site for being discreet and kind.

In dear memory of Maya,

She was my beloved puppy since age 6. The fire department said nights ago that they were sure “dogs run from fire” but this dog didn’t. My dear Maya lost her life going into the fire, trying to save me. She will be loved and missed dearly, and thank you so much to EFD and Animal Control for giving all respect in the world to my beautiful little love.

We are so lucky to have saved one dog, my beautiful Tommy.

And once again, thank you. For taking care of my family.
