There was a vegetation fire on Broadway Street in Fairhaven about an hour ago. Not that huge of a deal in itself — it burned about a third of an acre, Samoa Fire and Humboldt Bay Fire responded, they knocked it down pretty quick. All good.

But June just began, and it sure seems like fire season started right there with it, as if by cue. How many fires were there today?

1. The massive, building-destroying downtown Eureka fire that started at about 6 a.m. (We won’t even count the house fire off Harris, since it technically started last night.)

2. Fire behind the old Bank of American building in McKinleyville at about 11:45 a.m.

3. A fire out near Weitchpec at about 12:30 p.m.

4. A fire near Willow Creek at about 12:45 p.m.

5. A wildlands fire a quarter of a mile down a logging road in Fieldbrook at about 1:30 p.m.

6. And now this.

We had ourselves a nice, long, wet, winter. But people: Let’s not forget that stuff burns, OK?
