Don’t toss that bamboo overtaking your yard, the Sequoia Park Zoo is looking for donations to help feed its hungry red pandas.

Zookeeper Lindsey Miller tells the Outpost that red pandas eat one to two pounds of the crunchy stuff everyday. A tall order considering the zoo’s limited resources.

“We have about 100 bamboo plants on the grounds, but most of them are practically shrubs at the moment,” Miller said. “If we used all our own bamboo, we’d probably run out in a few months.”

Miller said the amount of donated bamboo the park receives can vary, but that roughly 90 percent of the pandas’ bamboo diet has come from donations in the last few weeks.

“We have about 30 regular donors already, but that can mean they donate once a month to twice a year,” Miller said. “It varies quite a bit. We are hugely appreciative if people can deliver it, but we can also schedule to come pick it up.”

If you’re interested in donating bamboo, you can contact the zoo staff by calling (707) 441-4229. All bamboo donations must be freshly cut, and free of any chemicals.

And don’t worry about abundance. Miller said the zoo will accept donations even when the pandas have more than they can eat.

“Sometime we have almost too much bamboo,” Miller said. ”That’s really great, because other animals at the zoo like it too.”
