Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office press release:
On Saturday, January 21, 2017 at approximately 10:20 p.m. Humboldt County Deputy Sheriffs responded to the College of the Redwoods on Tompkins Hill Rd in Eureka for a report of a burglary. CR security informed deputies that a white 2002 Dodge Ram pickup had intentionally crashed into a glass wall of the library. After gaining access to the building the suspected driver tied a chain to an ATM machine inside the library and drove off. While fleeing, the vehicle ran over a bicycle, a light pole, a large rock, a metal pole and a wooden park bench. The pickup then careened down an embankment into a parking lot and fled the campus. Prior to leaving campus property the ATM machine became dislodged from the chain and was left on scene. The vehicle continued to flee northbound on Hwy 101 and was later located by deputies parked along the highway near Fields Landing. A search of the area was conducted, however, deputies searched the area and were unable to locate possible suspects. The vehicle was possibly an unreported stolen vehicle, and was later towed by law enforcement.
