Trinity County Sheriff’s Office press release:

On July 2, 2017 at approximately 5:50pm the Trinity County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of an unresponsive male being brought to the Ruth Rec Dock via boat. Deputies arrived on scene and located John William Vayo, 38-years-old, of Arcata unresponsive and not breathing. Lifesaving efforts were conducted, however, they were unsuccessful and Vayo was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Witnesses stated Vayo was wake boarding at the time of the incident and was unresponsive when pulled from the water.

This incident is under investigation by the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office.
