This morning I spoke with Eric Nelson, manager of the Humboldt Bay Wildlife Refuge to talk about this weekend’s Goose Fly-off. If you get out the refuge before sunrise you will see an amazing sight — thousands and thousands of Aleutian Cackling Geese taking off for the skies all at once. Cued by the sunrise, it is a cacophony of cackling and flapping wings. It is truly a sight to behold. Gates to the Humboldt Bay Wildlife Refuge open at 6 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday for this event.
Wear a good jacket. It will be cold.
