From the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office:

On Saturday, 03/25/2017, at approximately 12:20 in the afternoon, the Humboldt Bay Coast Guard was dispatched to the South Jetty at the mouth of the Eel River for emergency services. A 15-year-old Loleta resident was fishing on the shore with family members when he was struck by a large floating log which was catapulted onto shore by a breaker wave.

The victim was airlifted to St. Joseph’s Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The Coroner Division has ruled the manner of death an accident with no indication of suspicious circumstances. The victim has been identified as Alex Sherman Lopez.
