Ay yi yi. The Eureka Police Department alerts us to what has to be one of the dumber scams. Judge for yourself:
The Eureka Police Department was notified today of yet another phone scam. In this particular scam, the caller uses call spoofing to make it appear that the Eureka Police Department is calling, using the non-emergency number (707) 441-4044. Once answered, the caller claims to be with the Eureka Police Department and threatens to issue a warrant if payment in iTunes gift cards isn’t made over the phone.
This is a scam. No legitimate business would demand payment over the phone using iTunes gift cards.
These scams come in many different shapes and forms. Never give personal or banking information over the phone. If you suspect you’ve received a scam call, hang up. If it is a real business you can always call them to confirm information.
