On May 5th, 2017, Cecil “Sharky “Hanson Sherman Jr. lost his battle with cancer. He passed away at home, surrounded by his loved ones, with special care from his niece Debra Alber. Sharky was born July 3, 1955. He was a Tolowa Tribal Member and Hupa and Wiyot descendant.

Shark was a lifelong resident of Humboldt County, growing up on the Old Table Bluff Rez. He loved working on and driving cars. He had numerous jobs throughout his lifetime, but the one he enjoyed most of all was at the Bear River Casino.

He was known for his unique beadwork and was a loyal Kansas City Chiefs fan. For many decades he was the life of the party. His laughter and happy-go-lucky attitude lit up any room and would put smiles on all of our faces.

One of his other enjoyments were fast cars and fast women. But there was always that one special friend, Darlene, who always had his back, wheather it was making a beer run, taking him to doctor visits or just going to the casino together.

In his later years, once the movie The Fast and The Furious come out, he found a new happiness, taking his family out to the movies, and watching Golden State Warriors games with his grandsons.

Sharky Found sobriety on Valentine’s Day 2014, and overnight he “became” a grumpy old man. He spent house and months riding, with his sister Susie, shotgun to group. He will be remembered for attending many ceremonies, watching the boys play sticks, football and buying beadwork to give to his family.

Sharky is survived by mother of his children Deanne Meyer, his son Jesse, Darrell, Cody and Jason; his daughter Sarah Lopez; siblings Joe, Susie, Douglas; his grandchildren Lio, MaTaya, Mariah, KaTana, Macy, Nathan, Madeline and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father Cecil Hanson Sherman Sr; mother Beverly James Moorehead; brothers Pete, Dennis and Robert; and sister Shirley Ann, Donna Jean, Diane; his grandson Alex Sherman Lopez, nephew Shannon, niece Stacie and Uncle Ted Moorehead.

Shark’s wishes were to be cremated and laid to rest by his mother on Friday, May 12, at 2 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Cemetery. Following the burial, the family invites you to a celebration of his life with great food and great company, remembering all of our favorite moments and sharky, at the Bear River Community Center, 266 Kensner Rd. Loleta. Please sing the guestbook at www.times-standard.com.
