The Mill Creek Fire 1 Fire has grown by roughly 600 acres since Friday, now burning 3,600 acres of Hoopa tribal land.

The fire, which the Hoopa Fire Department and Office of Emergency Services says was set by an arsonist, is now 54 percent contained.

More than 500 emergency personnel are working the fire, including multiple helicopters and air tankers. Air crews were able to make continuous water and fire retardant drops yesterday thanks to clearer skies.

Highway 96 remains closed between Bull Creek and Mill Creek due to fire behavior. Traffic is being diverted through Dowd Road.

Pilot-car controlled traffic is operational along Highway 96 at 7 a.m., noon and 6 p.m. Escorted traffic was briefly delayed yesterday evening when a large tree fell across the road and hit a power line.

Air quality remains poor for the entire Hoopa Valley.
