Daniel Thomas Fini, 64, of Eureka, passed away after a brief illness at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco on August 19, 2018, with his wife and daughter at his side.

Dan was born March 18, 1954 at St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka to Thomas and Patricia Fini. He attended Washington Elementary School, Winship Jr. High School, and graduated from Eureka Senior High School, Class of 1972.

Dan began working at Schmidbauer Lumber Company after graduation and retired from the lumber company almost 40 years later as Shipping Supervisor and overseeing the dry kilns. He made many lifelong friends there and after retirement enjoyed getting together with his buddies, Louis and Kent, for their annual lunches.

Dan was an avid fisherman, and we enjoyed fishing from Fort Bragg to Crescent City. He could almost always limit out on bottom fish, but I caught the salmon! Fishing, crabbing, diving and hunting were his true passions, and he looked forward every fall to deer hunting at the Mullen Ranch on Kneeland and cutting firewood with his father, Tom, and brother, Doug. A special thank you goes out to the “Ab Dive gang” for always including him in the annual event.

After retiring, Dan volunteered at the St. Joseph Rehabilitation facility’s Healing Garden for several years, using his green thumb to help others through their recovery. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and was a good friend to many.

Dan and I married in March of 2003 and together we built our home in Freshwater where we enjoyed gatherings with our family and friends, gardening, and taking time out to sit by the creek at the end of the day and relax. Tippy and I will wait for you there, Dan.

Dan leaves behind his wife of 15 years, Mary Sue, his son Brian Fini and daughter Kara Cooper (Heath), step-daughter Cloe’ Rice (Otto) and grandchildren Shaylee and Wyatt Cooper, and Henry and Helen Rice. Dan loved his children unconditionally and always enjoyed spending time with his grandkids. He also leaves behind his mother, Patricia Fini and brother Doug (Cate) Fini. He was predeceased by his father, Thomas Fini.

There will be a private gathering for family and friends in September.
