Dorothy was born March 13, 1930 in Kirksville, Missouri, the youngest of eight children born to Robert Cleveland Lowe and Nell (Nellie) Hazel Amon. In 1947 at the age of 17, she married Joe Glenn Hall. Dorothy and Joe had four children: Leroy, Billy, Randy, and Glenna. Joe and Dorothy moved their family from Missouri to Cloverdale where Joe worked in the mills and Dorothy worked seasonal work picking grapes. They moved the family from Cloverdale to Prineville, Oregon and then back to Humboldt County. Dorothy’s family lived in Blue Lake, Fortuna, and Hydesville, moving several times until they bought their house on A Street in Hydesville.
Over the years as her family grew up and moved out, Dorothy kept busy working with the local potato farmers on the harvesters. With such hard work she always came home with a few bruises and a smile.
Dorothy loved to help people and was a volunteer for many organizations in the area. She volunteered with the SCOP program in Fortuna, and volunteered in the schools. She was a den mother with the Boy Scouts, and worked with the Pink Ladies for decades. Dorothy taught herself to crochet after her first child was born. She would crochet blankets for the first New Year’s baby born at Redwood Memorial Hospital for years, and she donated baby blankets and booties to the Pink Ladies to sell in their store at Redwood Memorial. One year she crocheted an American flag to be auctioned off for the veterans. She packed kids to their sport events, and worked in the snack shack. Dorothy loved to help others.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her siblings, Ruth, Emma, Blanche, Mary, Robert, Lloyd, and Esther; her husband Joe Hall and two sons, Billy and Leroy and her special friend Louie Viies. She is survived by her son, Randy, and daughter Glenna, 10 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren. In truth there are many more “grandkids” that were not related by blood. Every child who met Dorothy ended up calling her Grammy. She wanted everyone to know she loved them all.
Funeral arrangements are by Gobel’s Mortuary with graveside services to be held at 2PM Wednesday, Aug 1, 2018 at the I.O.O.F. cemetery Hydesville, CA.
