Gregory Evan Mantle, 71, of McKinleyville, passed away suddenly on July 9th, 2018. Born and raised in Weed, he was the youngest son of John “Jack” and Mary Kolich Mantle.
Greg was a high school graduate of Bellarmine Preparatory School in San Jose, a graduate of the University of San Francisco; after two tours in Vietnam, he returned to earn his Juris Doctor degree from USF’s School of Law and relocated to Humboldt County in 1977, where he remained as a resident for the rest of his life.
Over the course of 24 years, Greg practiced law for the Humboldt County District Attorney’s office, the law offices of Francis B. Matthews, opened his own firm, and then joined the law office of Jon Lyons before ultimately working as a court-appointed attorney for Humboldt County. More than one now-retired judge recalled his ethics and integrity with admiration. Before retiring completely, Greg worked for 10 years at Target in Eureka. His easy smile and cautious optimism won him many friends within his work crew.
Greg was an avid supporter of Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, serving as both Cubmaster and Scoutmaster for many youths in the Arcata area. He mentored many, and with his guidance an impressive number achieved Eagle Scout rank. He loved camping trips, both with the Scouts and with his own family, and his experience will be missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother John Kenneth “Ken” Mantle, sister Patricia Mantle, and his daughter Christiane Mantle. He is survived by his sister, Maureen Kolda; five children, Lauren, John, Evan, Ryan, and William; and four grandchildren, James, Angelina, Aidan, and Gabriel. Services including an honor guard and flag ceremony will be held at the Arcata Veterans’ Hall on Sunday, August 12th, at 2 p.m.
All friends and family are welcome to attend and celebrate Greg’s life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to BSA Troop 15 of Arcata.
