The Fortuna Huskies continued to set a blistering pace by claiming their third tournament championship in three weeks at the Logger Classic on Saturday.

This time around, the Huskies defeated Daugherty Valley 84-69 for the championship, improving to 11-0 on the season.

The top-ranked Division-IV team in the state has barely been tested yet, putting up an average of 72.1 points a game and winning by an average margin of 23.

And they appear to be getting even better, with the return of senior Zac Claus this week giving the team an added dimension.

“I thought the boys played extremely well today,” Fortuna head coach Tony Miles said. “They were pushing the ball, stopping drives and closing out well.”

Claus did a good job distributing the ball, finishing with a team-high 11 assists, and Miles wasn’t surprised to see his starting point guard play an immediate role after just finishing up with the football team.

Zac Claus (23) returned to the Huskies lineup this week.

“These guys have been playing together a long time,” the coach said. “It didn’t take him long to settle back in.”

Senior Drew Gillette has been setting a blistering pace himself, and continued to play a pivotal role on Saturday, finishing with 26 points and earning tourney MVP honors.

Donald Willis also had a big game, finishing with 20 points and being named to the all-tournament team.

Bradley Willis added 15 points, as the Huskies pulled away in the second quarter, stretching a six-point lead to 23.

The Huskies will now take a break from competitive action until the day after Christmas, when they play Albany at the Windsor tournament.

Fortuna’s Drew Gillette, left, was named tourney MVP.

And despite the fast start, Miles is not concerned his players will begin to get complacent.

“That’s not the type of players they are,” the coach said. “They want to perform well whether they win or lose.”

The Huskies have also won the recent St. Helena and Arcata tournaments.

Hoopa Valley 91, Stellar Prep 68

The Warriors returned to winning ways with a comfortable win over Stellar Prep at the Logger Classic on Saturday.

George Navarro remained red hot with 37 points in the win, as Hoopa improved to 8-3 on the season and ended a two-game skid.

Wade Nixon added 20 points in the win, while Milton Mabry and Tristen Campbell each finished with seven points.

The Warriors got a balanced team effort with 10 players scoring after they opened up a 57-26 lead at halftime.

Hoopa travels to play Arcata on Tuesday.

Arcata 67 Sutter 24

The Tigers won for the second straight day at the Logger Classic, defeating a struggling Sutter team on Saturday.

After knocking off Hoopa by 20 points on Friday, the Tigers won by 43 points against the overmatched Huskies.

A total of 11 different Arcata players scored in the win, with Jocab Stoker leading the way with 12 points.

Jason Tuermer-Lee added 11 points as the Tigers improved to 4-5, while teammates Jonah Gardner scored nine and Niko Zambas eight.

The Tigers host Hoopa Valley on Tuesday night.

McKinleyville 62, Eureka 49

The Panthers closed out the Logger Classic with a comfortable win over their Big 5 rivals.

AJ Stubbs scored a game-high 19 points for McKinleyville, which improved to 5-5 on the season, while teammate Isaac Puzz added 17 points.

Freddie Sundberg scored 12.

For Eureka, which dropped to 1-8, Jaeden Thayer scored a team-high 12 points, while Bryson Glavich scored 11 and Zach Reed 10.

St. Bernard’s 78, Round Valley 54

Lane Thrap scored 21 points to lead the Crusaders past Round Valley in a non-tournament game at St. Bernard’s on Saturday evening.

With the win, St. Bernard’s improves to 4-2.

Luke Fairfield added 13 points for the Crusaders, who got contributions from several players.

“Everybody got off the bench and got some good playing time,” St. Bernard’s head coach Steve Thrap said. “And the bench crew did a good job.”
