Four local teams claimed tournament championships on Saturday.

The McKinleyville girls continued to show why they are a much improved team from a year ago by defeating St. Bernard’s to claim the Panther Classic, while the Eureka Loggers won their second tournament in three weeks at Lincoln High in San Francisco.

And not to be out-done, Del Norte and Ferndale made it four tournament championships for the Humboldt-Del Norte League.

The Warriors comfortably beat Bank out of Oregon 49-33 in the Hidden Valley championship, while in Oakland on Saturday night, the Ferndale girls continued their impressive start to the season with a tournament championship at the California School for the Deaf tournament.

Eureka 52, Lick Wilmerding 43

The Loggers continued their impressive start to the season with a nine-point win over Lick Wilmerding out of San Francisco at the Lincoln tournament in San Francisco.

The ever-reliable Makaila Napoleon was named tourney MVP after scoring 17 points for the Loggers, who won for the third straight day.

Napoleon had 66 points over the three games, including 32 points in Friday’s semifinal win over Urban.

Sophie Chalmers also had a big game in the championship, finishing with 16 points, while Paige Lyons finished with eight.

Dorshaela Wesson capped another strong all-around tournament with an all-tourney selection.

With the win, the Loggers improved to 8-2.

Lick Wilmerding came into the game ranked No. 100 in the state by MaxPreps, two spots ahead of Eureka.

Fortuna 54, Fort Bragg 24

The Huskies held Fort Bragg to just five second-half points on the way to a third-place finish at the Lady Panther Classic on Saturday.

Junior guard Moncerrat Bernal paced the Fortuna girls with 14 points, including seven in the opening quarter as the Huskies opened up a five-point first-half lead.

In the second half, however, they pulled away, outscoring the Timberwolves 31-6 and improving to 7-4 on the season.

Charlotte Carroll added 10 points in the win, while Jordyn Quen and Bailey Parker each had eight points.

Arcata 50, Red Bluff 69

The Arcata girls closed out the Red Bluff Holiday Classic with their second straight loss on Saturday.

Kali Zanotti scored a team-high 10 points in the loss, while Raja Cohen and Anna Williams each scored nine.

“We were disappointed in the way we played,” Arcata head coach Doug Oliveira said. “We’re making some mistakes we shouldn’t be making at this time of the year.

“The effort is good. But Red Bluff is no better than teams we’re going to face in the Big 5, and we’re going to have to play better.”

The Tigers dropped to 6-4 with the loss, and will now open Big 5 action at home to McKinleyville on Wednesday night in a game brought forward from the new year.

“It’s our league opener at home. It’s a big game for us,” Oliveira said.

Ferndale 46, CSD 43

The Ferndale Wildcats beat the home team in a close matchup in the tournament championship on Saturday.

The win was the fifth straight for the Cats, who are now 8-1.

No scoring details were available.

South Fork also won at the CSD tournament on Saturday, defeating Emery 52-45 to improve to 7-6.
