EPD: Bolt Cutter-Toting Man Arrested in Eureka; Surveillance Footage Suggests Connection to String of Car Burglaries
Eureka Police Department press release:
On February 11, 2018, at about 11:20 a.m., officers with the Eureka Police Department
responded to the 600 block of J Street for the report of a suspicious person with bolt
cutters casing vehicles. Officers contacted a person matching the description and
identified him as 20 year old Austin Porter.
Porter was detained and searched due to being on probation for burglary and falsifying
his identity. He was found to be in possession of burglary tools and heroin.
One officer noted that he had taken several vehicle burglary reports in the downtown area
over the last 24 hours and had surveillance from one of the reports. Officers were able to
determine that Porter was the suspect in the surveillance images.
Porter was arrested and booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility for
vehicle burglary, possession of burglary tools, possession of heroin, and probation
violation. Probation was contacted and authorized a hold. Investigation into the
additional vehicle burglaries is ongoing.
