From Humboldt Bay Fire:

On 06/11/18, at 7:44 P.M. units from Humboldt Bay Fire were dispatched to a reported structure fire at a residence on the 2100 block of Summer Street. The first arriving engine found neighbors had forced entry through the doors and windows, had been trying to extinguish the fire with garden hoses and made entry to do a search for a possible victim inside the residence. They provided information to the arriving firefighters which allowed the firefighters to quickly extinguish the fire and continue the search for a possible missing female, No one was found inside after the search. The neighbors quick action minimized damage to that residence and preventing fire spread to the adjoining residence. During the fire the tenant arrived and was repeatedly attempting to enter the residence to look for the female. Eureka Police assistance was requested when the tenant was became confrontational. The tenant left the scene but then returned later and was detained by Eureka Police.

The fire was isolated to a bedroom. Fire personnel remained on scene for approximately one hour to remove water and investigate the cause. The property sustained water and smoke damage and is not able to be inhabited however there was no structural damage.

There was a minor injury to a neighbor who declined treatment, no injuries to fire personnel. The cause of the fire in under investigation. Damage was estimated at $5000. Estimated value saved is $216,000.

Humboldt Bay Fire is grateful for the assist from the neighbors but cautions to call 911 early and let the fire department fight the fire with the appropriate equipment and training. We do not want well intentioned bystanders to become victims.
