Jim Armstrong passed away too early on November 5, 2018 at the age of 57 in his home town of Eureka. He left behind many who loved him dearly, and for those who would like to be present a Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held Sunday, November 18, 2018 at the Sequoia Conference Center at 2 p.m. (901 Myrtle Ave., Eureka).

Jim was born on May 5, 1961 in Eureka to the late Robert H. and Neva A. Armstrong. He grew up alongside his brother Bob and sister Susie. He attended Washington Elementary, Zane Middle, and Eureka High Schools before studying Technical Drawing at College of the Redwoods. His interest in law enforcement began in 1981 when he became a Reserve Officer, and he later enrolled in the Police Academy. Upon graduation in April of 1981, he received his appointment as a police recruit and became a police officer in August of the same year. Jim loved being a police officer and enjoyed spending time with the guys on his watch, both on and off-duty. He served as an Investigator, Field Training Officer and Sergeant during his twenty-nine and a half years of service. Jim retired from the Eureka Police Department in 2011. After retiring he worked part-time as an Evidence Tech (until 2015) for EPD, and as an extra-duty Deputy with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office until his death.

Jim’s daughters –- Tess and Sara -– were the source of his greatest joy. He was the biggest fan of their sports teams and would often be found on the sidelines taking pictures or videos. He traveled all over the country to watch games, visit baseball parks, catch up with friends and family, and make as many contacts as he could with his HAM radio. Many days pre and post retirement were spent with friends and hobbies including the CA UMCI motorcycle chapter, woodworking, HAM radios, traveling in his RV, taking in local theater productions, flying his drone, photographing our beautiful surroundings, and studying up on WWII.

He is survived by his daughters and their husbands, Tess and Chris Faust and Sara and John Salmon, his sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Craig Dillingham, and his brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Lori Armstrong.
