From Humboldt Bay Fire:
On October 13th, 2018 @ 0258 hrs, Humboldt Bay Fire responded with 2 Engines, 1 Truck, 1 Squad and 2 Chief Officers to a reported Structure Fire at the intersection of California St. and W. Hawthorne St.
The first Chief Officer arrived on scene and reported a single story residential structure with heavy fire from the rear of the building. The building had been previously identified by Humboldt Bay Fire and City of Eureka Code Enforcement as an unoccupied “Do Not Enter” building due to unsafe interior conditions. All windows and doors to the residence were secured with plywood. Firefighters initiated a defensive attack on the fire and achieved fire control within one hour. Firefighters briefly entered the building after the fire was controlled to confirm no persons were inside. Firefighters remained on scene for 3 hours to completely extinguish the fire and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
Humboldt Bay Fire would like to remind the public not to drive over fire hoses and abide to temporary street closures in the area of a fire. A vehicle running over a fire hose can damage the hose and cut off the water supply to firefighters actively engaged in firefighting operations.
