From the Humboldt County Association of Governments:

The Humboldt County Association of Governments (HCAOG) and the Eureka Police Department have executed an agreement for supplemental patrols on the Safety Corridor to improve safety and reduce collisions.

In 2002, the 101 Eureka-Arcata Safety Corridor, was designated as a double fine zone (through January 2006), as an interim solution to the multiple and continuous collisions on the highway. In 2007, the state legislature amended the California Streets and Highway Code, modifying a qualifying condition to solely consider head-on collisions, among other requirements. As a result, the Eureka-Arcata 101 Safety Corridor no longer qualifies for double fines.

Construction of an interchange at Indianola and a half signal at Airport Road is currently fully funded and scheduled to begin construction in the spring 2021. The initial term of the contract is for one year, from November 1, 2018 through October 31, 2019. The contract will be considered for renewal on an annual basis.

About HCAOG:

HCAOG is a Joint Powers Agency comprised of the seven incorporated cities (Arcata, Blue Lake, Eureka, Ferndale, Fortuna, Rio Dell, Trinidad), and the County of Humboldt. It is the designated Regional Transportation Planning Agency (RTPA), largely responsible for programming highway and road improvements, public transportation resources, the roadside call box program, and active transportation education. HCAOG is complemented by several committees, which include representatives from tribal governments, social service and transit organizations, education institutions, as well as stakeholders from the general public.

Eureka Police Department Enforcement:

The Eureka Police Department is pleased to be working in partnership with HCAOG to conduct extra patrols within the Safety Corridor to help reduce the number of traffic collisions. HCAOG will be providing funding so EPD Officers can work on a voluntary overtime basis focusing on education and enforcement of traffic violations that cause, or contribute to the cause of traffic collisions. These extra patrols will not take away from our daily staffing levels or reduce the level of service to the community.
