Press release from Humboldt Bay Fire:

On April 19th, 2019 Humboldt Bay Fire responded to report of a

mattress fire against the exterior of Serenity Inn at 2019 Broadway St.

It appears that a discarded cigarette lit a pile of 6 mattresses stacked in the breezeway.

Thankfully, a bystander noticed the smoke and called it in quickly.

Humboldt Bay Fire initially responded with 4 Fire Engines, One Ladder Truck, One Command Staff, and One Public Information Officer, before response was reduced to one Fire Engine.

There were no injuries, and no damages beyond the discarded mattresses and light scorching to the outside of the building.

Humboldt Bay Fire would like to remind the community how important it is to properly dispose of cigarettes. Cigarette fires cause close to 1,000 deaths and 3,000 injuries each year in the United States, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
