Some of the top young basketball players in Humboldt County continued to impress over the weekend, with a big showing by Team Beasts at a pair of prestigious tournaments.

All 11 of the club’s teams were in action, 10 of them traveling to the Bay Area to compete at the NBBA Spring Classic, with two of them in particular standing out.

The eighth grade boys team, who are 7-1 in two tournament appearances, are one of Team Beasts’ biggest surprises this spring, claiming their first tournament championship over the weekend.

“They’re really doing well,” club director Eddy Vainuku said, adding that he didn’t expect them to be this successful this quickly “They’ve meshed together and they’re playing well.”

The seventh grade girls have been even more impressive and continued to set the standard for all 11 of the Team Beasts squads with yet another stellar showing over the weekend.

The seventh graders won their fifth tournament in five appearances.

“This group, they answered the call against some of the best seventh grade girls in the Bay Area,” Vainuku said. 

Team Beasts ninth grade girls also had a big showing at the Bay Area tournament, reaching the championship game in their division, and placing second.

“It was just great to do down there and showcase Humboldt talent,” Vainuku said. “People were coming up to us and saying you can’t be from Humboldt. They thought we were from LA.”

The club’s ninth grade boys also had a big showing in Portland, at the ESPN 100, an invitational only tournament and one of the biggest showcase events for young talent on the West Coast.

The Humboldt boys, featuring some of the best freshmen talent in the area, won all three games in pool play and finished the tournament with a record of 3-1.

The club’s six grade girls team also had a good showing at the Spring Classic, placing third in their bracket.

Team Beasts will continue a busy season with a trip to a tournament in Medford, Oregon, this coming weekend, before a trip to the Reno Memorial Day Tournament.
