The College of the Redwoods men’s soccer team added another local recruit this week, when Fortuna High standout Aaron Mignon signed a letter of intent to play for the Corsairs next season.

And for the Husky senior, who helped lead his team to a North Coast Section championship in the fall, it was an easy decision.

“The main thing that led me to this college is that I wanted to stay close to home,” he said after signing on Wednesday afternoon. “I wasn’t too ready to move away.”

Mignon follows in the footsteps of several former Fortuna players who have gone on to play for the local community college program, including his older brother.

“I wanted to do the same,” the younger Mignon said.

He joins a program that struggled to an 0-14-3 record last fall, but is confident he can help put the team back on the map.

“I believe I have the ability to help change this program around,” he said. “I am one of those players that like to make their teammates a better player.”

Mignon showed his clutch side in the 2018 North Coast Section decider against Del Norte, scoring the tying goal with just a few minutes remaining in regulation in a matchup the Huskies would eventually win 3-2 in overtime.

He says he intends to study criminal justice law enforcement.

Mignon is the second Humboldt-Del Norte League player to commit to the Corsairs in the past week, joining former McKinleyville Panthers standout Richard Carpenter.

A second Fortuna senior, Makayla McKnight, has also committed to play for the CR women’s team in 2019.
