CORRECTION: Humboldt State finally wrote back to us last night, just before 7 p.m. In an email, spokesperson Aileen Yoo told the Outpost that the dramatic graffiti on the entrance sign pictured in the video below actually occurred at the end of September — not in the last few days, as we had originally reported.

In addition, the email blast sent out to students about the second act of vandalism was sent out on Saturday, not Friday.

The Outpost regrets the errors.

“Both cases are being treated as separate cases of vandalism,” Yoo writes. “There are no suspects but UPD continues to investigate both situations. We’re also asking anyone who has more information to please contact UPD at 707-826-5555.”

Racist messages were found prominently written across two pieces of Humboldt State University property in the last few days. (Actually, months — see above.)

The HSU Police Department put out an alert last Friday Saturday regarding the first incident, which involved a racist message that was tagged onto an Art Building vending machine.

“Illegals come here to steal EBT, healthcare, and fuck our women. Fuck illegals,” the graffiti reportedly read according to an image circulating on social media. (see the Instagram post embedded at the bottom of this page).

UPD reported that the graffiti was cleaned up that same day. However, more racist messages and images were found spray painted on the back of the HSU entrance sign on the corner of 14th Street and LK Wood Boulevard over the weekend.

Figures that appeared to be Ku Klux Klansmen and phrases like “Build the Wall,” “Guns Allowed,” and “Fuck Socialism” were painted on the sign among other things as seen in the video above.

Humboldt State’s El Centro Académico Cultural, part of the university’s Cultural Center for Academic Excellence, also issued a statement in response to the graffiti, calling for solidarity against the hateful messages.

“This kind of hateful aggression can not and will not be tolerated on campus,” El Centro stated.

El Centro will hold a meeting in Room 205 of Nelson Hall East tomorrow at noon where community members can have an open discussion about the issue.

The Outpost requested more information related to the graffiti from the HSU Marketing and Communications Department this afternoon, but has not yet received an official response. It is unclear if these two incidents are related.

Read more from the UPD statement issued on Friday:

Today the University Police Department received a report of racist graffiti targeting immigrants on a vending machine in the Art Building. It has been documented and is being cleaned up.

There is no place for this at our University. We support everyone in our campus community, including immigrants and our Dreamer students.

As HSU President Tom Jackson has said: “As a campus, we will not tolerate any act of hate and racism in our community. It is our collective responsibility to create an environment where all students, faculty, and staff feel safe and free from bigotry.”

The timely reporting of this incident helped the University to investigate and clean up the graffiti quickly. If you have any information that can help us identify the perpetrator(s) responsible for this heinous act please report it to University Police at 826-5555.
