Animal control officers with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office have called off the search for a diaper-wearing chimp reportedly seen sitting on a guardrail on the southbound side of Highway 101 in Weott this afternoon.

According to scanner traffic, the reporting person told California Highway Patrol dispatchers that he knows what a chimpanzee looks like, and that he’s not crazy.

HCSO public information officer Samantha Karges told the Outpost minutes ago that officers searched the area, but did not find a chimp.
