City of Rio Dell press release:
While on her way home from attending a meeting in Sacramento with the League of California Cities, newly elected mayor of Rio Dell, Debra Garnes, met Karen, the Manager of Granzella’s in the town of Williams. Having never met before, Mayor Garnes was surprised to find out that Karen happened to have an Aunt who lived in her home town of Rio Dell. During this brief encounter, Karen was able to enlist the services of Mayor Garnes in delivering a valued treasure to Karen’s aunt, Nancy Kurtz.
Mrs. Kurtz has been a resident of Rio Dell since the age of nine and currently is 90 year old. She was happily married to Albert Kurtz, a Navy veteran who passed away Jan. 22, 1992. Mayor Garnes, who is also a Navy veteran, was happy to deliver the valuable treasure, her late husband’s flag, a memento that she had been separated from for 27 years.
Mayor Garnes delivered the flag directly to Mrs. Kurtz in honor of her late husband’s memory and service to his country. The delivery occurred on January 22, 2019, exactly twenty seven years since Albert Kurtz’s passing.
“It feels like a miracle to get this today because you know it’s been 27 years today,” Nancy Kurtz stated.
Mayor Garnes intends to visit her newfound friend regularly.
