File photo – The CR women were within two points of Butte late in Saturday’s game before falling 68-60.

The Corsairs dropped two more games on the basketball court at home to Butte on Saturday, although both Redwoods teams showed some encouraging signs.

The Redwoods men, who dropped to 0-5 in the Golden Valley Conference and 0-21 overall, lost 62-45 to a Butte team that improved to 4-1 and 11-11.

Elysha Jackson paced the Corsairs offensively with 16 points, while Donald Snowton added 13 points in what was a physical game throughout.

“We couldn’t get any early flow into our offense because Butte is a very organized team with a lot of athleticism,” CR interim head coach Darren Turpin said.

“DJ Snowton came out with great energy and was relentless to the ball tonight.”

The second half was better for the Corsairs.

“We came out of halftime with a different mindset to trust what we work on every day, and offensively we had better success,” Turpin added.

The CR women, meanwhile, lost a close one to Butte by a score of 68-60, with the visitors pulling away late in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

“I was very pleased with how we played today,” CR head coach Jain Tuey said.

Bree Northern scored a team-high 15 points in the loss as CR rallied from a slow start, overcoming a 14-point deficit to tie the game heading into the fourth quarter.

“Again tonight we didn’t have a great first quarter but we got in a rhythm in the second quarter,” Tuey said, adding that “we got refocused at the break and came out with a great third quarter ready to fight back.”

Darienne Kartes and Bobbie Purify each scored 12 points for CR, which dropped to 0-5 in the GVC and 5-13 overall.

The final period proved to be decisive.

“In the fourth we lost some of our energy and fight and turned the ball over and struggled offensively,” Tuey said.

The Corsairs battled to the end, however, and were within two points of the visitors with two minutes remaining.

“Overall, the girls played their hearts out and showed they won’t back down,” the head coach said. “I’m positive we will get a win in the second half of conference play.”

With the win, Butte improved to 3-2 in the GVC and 9-9 overall.
