On May 28, 2019, at about 10:33 a.m., a Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputy on patrol in the Blue Lake area conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on Highway 299 near the Essex Lane exit due to the driver’s inability to maintain a lane.

Upon contacting the two occupants of the vehicle, the deputy learned that both occupants were on formal probation with a search clause.

During a search of the vehicle, deputies located over 34 grams of heroin and over 2 grams of methamphetamine. Deputies also located stolen mail from a burglary in the Ferndale area reported on May 26.  

The driver of the vehicle, 40-year-old Steven Russel Buskirk, was arrested and booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on charges of possession of a controlled substance for sales, transportation of a controlled substance, possession of stolen property, committing a felony while out on bail, possession of a controlled substance and violation of probation.

The second occupant of the vehicle, a female subject, was searched and released at the scene.
