By Ray Hamill — Seven of the nine local high school football teams have games scheduled for this weekend, including three playing here on the North Coast.
Topping the bill is the Milk Can showdown between the Huskies and Wildcats at Fortuna High on Friday night.
The best annual rivalry game on the North Coast kicks off at 7 p.m., with no JV game this year, and both teams come into the showdown riding some momentum after each posted a first win of the season this past weekend.
Also in action on Friday night, unbeaten Del Norte (3-0) travels to Petaluma (1-2), while unbeaten St. Bernard’s (3-0) plays at La Salle (0-1) in Oregon.
Hitting the road for the second straight week, the Eureka Loggers travel to Santa Rosa to play Montgomery, where something will have to give between two teams looking for their first win of the season.
The Loggers (0-3) have been tantalizingly close the past three weekends and will be looking to break through into the win column against the Vikings (0-3), an NCS Division 3 program.
The McKinleyville Panthers will also be action, traveling to Lower Lake in Lake County and hoping to build on the momentum of last week’s big win over Fort Bragg.
Rounding out the weekend action, Arcata (0-2) hosts Willits (2-0) at the Redwood Bowl on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a game that has been switched from Friday night.
Hoopa (0-2) and South Fork (1-1) each have a scheduled bye.
