This one was a little more impressive.
After breaking into the win column a week ago with a nice road victory over a struggling Montgomery, the Eureka Loggers returned home to beat a physical Shasta team 35-21 at Albee Stadium on Friday night.
Posting a second straight win was one thing, but beating a Shasta program the Loggers have traditionally struggled against was even more impressive.
“They’re a very physical team,” Eureka head coach Jason White said. “That was a tough team to beat.”
To put it in perspective, according to the Eureka coaches, it was just the Loggers’ fourth win over the Wolves in the past 25 years.
It was also the next step for a young Eureka team that is beginning to find its feet.
The return of all-star lineman Miles Meynell was a big boost for the home team, and his teammates seemed to feed off of that.
“Our playmakers tonight made a lot of plays, which is what you have to do if you want to win games,” White said.
After giving up a quick touchdown to the visitors on the opening drive of the game, the Loggers answered in emphatic fashion when quarterback Trevor Bell and receiver Josiah Graham combined on a 65-yard TD pass.
The Loggers defense held firm after that despite giving up some yards and first downs, and the home team led 14-7 at halftime after Lamarie Dunn broke free down the sideline for a 79-yard TD run late in the second quarter.
The gap could have been wider at the interval after linebacker/safety Diego Garcia recovered a fumble on the next play from scrimmage to give Eureka possession at the Shasta 18, although the Loggers were unable to convert.
It didn’t matter, however, with three second-half TDs.
Antorious Bell continued to impress with two TD runs after the break and has quickly established himself as one of the Loggers’ chief playmakers on offense.
His namesake, quarterback Trevor Bell, added a 25-yard scoring run late in the game, breaking several tackles on his way to the end zone.
Trent Morrow added an 82-yard reception in the opening quarter to give the Loggers possession inside the red zone, although they were unable to convert on that opportunity.
Garcia had a big game on defense, as did the ever reliable Chase “Biscuit” Steubing, who continues to set the tone on that side of the ball and has become a tackling machine.
“Having Miles Meynell back on the offensive line, that made a big difference for us,” White said.
The Eureka JVs lost 20-13 to Shasta, dropping to 1-4 on the season.
