File photo – The Eureka Loggers have a bye next weekend.

It was an interesting weekend for local football for several reasons.

The Little 4 got off to scintillating start, with 21 touchdowns and 150 points combined between the four teams, as well as a thrilling finish at the Redwood Bowl.

The Del Norte Warriors got back to winning ways, the South Fork Cubs won a pivotal game in their season, and the Ferndale Wildcats had yet another statement win.

And that’s not even mentioning which team is suddenly one of the hottest in the area …

1 — Loggers remain hot, continue to grow

Eureka is the only team on the North Coast to have won games in each of the past three weeks, improving to 3-3 with a 27-0 win at Ukiah on Friday.

The rest of the Big 4 had better be ware, as a young Loggers team is fast shedding its inexperienced tag and growing stronger week to week.

Even considering that Ukiah may be down this year, the shutout win leaves the Loggers in perfect position as they head into their bye weekend.

A trip to Chico awaits after that, before the Loggers open conference play in what should be a fascinating championship race this fall.

Despite their early struggles in terms of wins and losses, the Loggers might just be once again the team to beat in the Big 4.

2 — Del Norte miscues don’t prove costly

The Warriors are good, but not as good as they could be.

A team that was particularly effective at taking care of the ball early in the season and had zero turnovers in the opening three games, has been anything but that lately, with three turnovers in Friday’s game against Fortuna.

Add in 150 yards in penalties, and you might wonder how the Warriors won the game 29-13.

They won because they’re good when they not coughing the ball up or making mental mistakes, and if they take care of those concerns, the sky’s the limit for this group in 2019.

A special mention to Levi Cox Cooley, who had 250 yards rushing in a career game in the win.

3 — Cats are now the frontrunners in L4

The Ferndale Wildcats had a statement win this weekend — again.

And if anyone doubted their championship credentials, they answered in emphatic fashion with a highly-entertaining 45-38 victory over defending champion Arcata at the Redwood Bowl on Friday night.

Admittedly, the game wasn’t exactly a purist’s delight defensively, but it was one you couldn’t take your eyes off and impressive for a number of reasons.

The quality of offense from both teams was great to see, with a number of playmakers stepping up, while the character each squad showed by repeatedly battling back and answering the call was entertainment at its finest.

The rematch on October 19 is one local fans will not want to miss.

4 — Plenty of Little 4 offense

Most of us didn’t see this coming, at least not after the sort of defense we’ve seen from these teams in pre-league play.

But the Little 4 exploded out of the gate from an offensive standpoint, with 150 points and 21 touchdowns combined from the four teams in their openers.

If this is any indication of what’s to come this year, it should be a fun ride.

5 — Statement win for South Fork Cubs

The South Fork Cubs pulled out a very impressive come-from-behind victory over visiting Stuart Hall on Saturday evening, scoring a pair of late touchdowns to win 44-40.

The win not only sets them up nicely for league play, which gets under way next weekend, but it is one that will go a long way towards the development of this young team, as well as giving them plenty of confidence going forward.

The Cubs are sitting pretty at 3-2 right now, and a young and inexperienced roster is fast coming together as a competitive unit.
