For today’s Q-and-A with a Humboldt County official, local media were offered the opportunity to ask questions of Behavioral Health Director Emi Botzler-Rodgers, MFT, concerning local mental health coverage during the shelter-in-place order. Hear her answers above and/or let us give you some of the highlights below.

Has County Mental Health seen an increased demand for services and if so what has it done to meet that increase with the restrictions necessitated by “shelter in place” and social distancing?

Not so much an increase in demand, says Botzler-Rodgers, but a shift. As you’d expect, lots of people are feeling anxious about the pandemic and oftentimes just really want someone to talk to. This has led to the creation of the “Covid Community Mental Health Line” which people can call at 707-268-2999.

What strategies would you recommend to help people maintain mental and emotional wellness due to increased isolation and anxiety caused by COVID-19?

Good self-care habits are helpful anytime, pandemic or not. Specifically, it is recommended that people maintain a healthy diet, drink plenty of water and exercise regularly. Also, take media breaks!

How have operations changed at Sempervirens and has demand for it changed since the shelter-in-place [order] went into effect?

Sempervirens has implemented stricter screening protocols and has been allotted safety equipment for both staff and patents. Telehealth services are available when appropriate. Right now the county is working on plans for how to deal with patients should they test positive for COVID-19.

Has Humboldt County seen a rise in suicides since the shelter-in-place order?

Similarly to what is happening statewide, Humboldt has not seen a significant increase in suicides.

Which services are available for people experiencing a mental health crisis during this time?

All the same services are available as in non-pandemic times. If you or someone you know is having problems, the number for the 24-Hour Mental Health Crisis Line is 707-445-7715.

What resources are available for parents who are concerned about their children’s mental health during this time.

Again, all services are up and running. For more information see here.
