###

UPDATE, 8:17 a.m.: Highway 101 is definitely open at Leggett, according to CHP dispatch, but again — if you absolutely must travel south this morning, you’d best carry chains and be prepared for long delays and/or to be turned around.

###

UPDATE, 8:12 a.m.: Highway 101 in northern Mendocino is looking like a very dicey proposition at the moment. There is snow on the valley floor in Laytonville, according to CHP dispatch, and jacknifed big rigs are blocking traffic. See this link for more.

###

UPDATE, 7:54 a.m.: Snow is piling up just south of Leggett and Highway 101 may need to be closed, according to the California Highway Patrol.

###

UPDATE, 7:47 a.m.: From the county roads department:

  • Alderpoint Road chains are required.
  • Shelter Cove Road carry chains.
  • Briceland Road carry chains.
  • Redway Drive between Dean Creek and Willow is currently closed.

###

Heavy rain and snow fell all over the North Coast overnight, and this morning there is plenty of aftermath.

The Caltrans QuickMap is showing that chains are required on Highway 299 at or before Berry Summit, and also on Highway 36 at Bridgeville.

Highway 199, closed by trees down in the roadway last night, is still closed.

Power is out in Willow Creek and Hoopa, and also in Petrolia, Redway, Briceland, Alderpoint and elsewhere in Southern Humboldt.

More weather is still on the way. The National Weather Service has called for a chance of hailstorms and thunderstorms today. We’ll have more updates as the day goes on, but if you have to travel today, or if you’re curious about when your power might be back, you might want to check these resources:
