From the California Highway Patrol:

On 07-09-2020, just after 5:00 PM, the CHP Humboldt Communications Center received a call of a multi vehicle accident on northbound US-101 at Indianola Cutoff. Upon arrival, CHP Officers determined this was a 6-vehicle, hit-and-run crash, with minor to major injuries. The preliminary investigation shows that an unknown model black BMW sedan had been driving recklessly when the driver of that vehicle lost control and spun out in the roadway. Although it did not collide with any other vehicles, five other vehicles collided while attempting to avoid the BMW. The black BMW then fled the scene northbound on US-101 prior to law enforcement arrival.

One driver suffered a major injury and another driver suffered a minor injury as a result of this crash and both drivers were transported by ambulance to St. Joseph Hospital for further evaluation of their injuries.

The Humboldt Area CHP is continuing its investigation into this crash and asks anyone who may have information which could help to identify the vehicle and driver involved to contact the Humboldt Area CHP Office at 707-822-5981 or send an email to humboldt_area.humboldt_area@chp.ca.gov.

CHP and Caltrans would also like to remind drivers that there are ongoing roadway improvement projects being made throughout the area which require reduced speed work zones and lane closures. Please remember to slow down, observe and obey posted signage, and use care while driving through the work zones.
