Everette passed away at home on August 20, 2020 with his daughters by his side. Everett was born on May 26, 1934 in Eureka to John Wesley Ellingwood of Fort Bragg and Loretta Nevada Lambert of Covelo.

He remained in Fort Bragg before moving with his family to Eureka. It was there that his met his future wife, Anita. As the story goes, he had a buddy (Ray) heading off to serve his country and asked Everette to take care of Anita while he was gone, and he did just that — he married her!

As time went by and they got better acquainted it was realized by Anita and her two sisters Rose Dugan (Cruz), Lillian Curran (Cruz) and brother Johnny Cruz that it was Everette’s boat they had been “borrowing” to row down the Noyo River in Fort Bragg … of course they returned the boat before he ever knew it was gone. Evidently they did that more than once!

Once married Everette and Anita moved to Willow Creek, where he worked at the Carolina Cal Mill, which is now closed. They then moved back to Eureka, where their first daughter, Loretta (1955) and the twins Gary & Gale (1958) were born.

Everette would do whatever it took to take care of the family. He eventually started working for Redwood Empire Aggregates under the supervision of Max Sweeney and retiring with them after more than 30 years raking asphalt.

He was known as the “Candy Man.” Whenever he greeted someone it was with a smile and the question “Would you like some candy?” It didn’t matter if you were a child or and adult. – he always had a pocket full of candy to share. One of his favorite things to do was to go to Denny’s restaurant for coffee or a bite to eat. He loved visiting with the staff (mostly waitresses) and anyone else he happened to know that might be there. They always enjoyed him coming by and sharing stories with each other.

He also was an avid hunter of deer / bear as well as fishing and getting abalone, usually at Fort Bragg. He was a Member of the Foursquare Faith Center Church for many years, as well as “The Prime Timers” group there.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Anita Ellingwood his son Gary, Ellingwood and his parents John and Loretta Ellingwood. He is survived by his daughters Gale Ellingwood and Jay’ne McCain both of Eureka, Loretta (Tim) Walund; grandchildren Suz-nne (Brian) Sexton, Christina (Cody) Miners Lewman (Kaily) Walund; great-grandchildren Brooks & Kinley Sexton, Hazel Miners and Westley Walund and his beloved dog Missy.

Thanks to the Visiting Angels, Hospice and Cloney’s Pharmacy for his care and prescription needs, neighbors Maryn Pherson, Steve & Melissa Sandeen,Gail Naren & Pasqulias as well as John & Linda Brooks who were always checking on him. A very special thanks to Bob and Joan Gish who were more like family than neighbors always helping out at any time or in any way.

Viewing will be on Monday, September 14, 2020 at Sanders Funeral Home, 1835 E Street Eureka from 10-11 a.m. with a memorial service to follow at noon at the Faith Center Church on Bay Street in Eureka. Private burial for the family will follow at 2 p.m.

A celebration of life will be planned at a future date due to COVID-19 health concerns and restrictions.
