Ines passed away on March 1, 2021 at the age of 91. She had been married to her husband, Pedro Furtado for 61 years at his passing four years ago.

Ines was born May 7, 1929 to Joao and Leopoldina Mateus in Ponta da Faja Grande, Flores Azores.

Ines immigrated to the United States in 1963 with Pedro and son Jose, she lived in Arcata for the last 58 years. She first worked at Lazio’s Fish Co then as a Housekeeper until retirement.

She loved to bake and feed everyone. She also did lots of creative needle point work. She traveled many times to the Azores, several other trips to Europe and cruises. Her last cruise to celebrate her 50th anniversary with her family was special to her. Family and faith were especially important to her. She especially enjoyed attending her grand children’s activities and watching them perform.

She is survived by her son Rev Jose Furtado, son Jim Furtado and his wife Keri, grandchildren Justin and Jenna Furtado, sister-in-law Maria L. Furtado, who visited her every day after mom lost dad, Mary Fatima Furtado and Etelvina Mateus, nephew Jose Serpa, who called her every day after mom lost dad, as well as numerous nieces and nephews in the United States and the Azores.

Ines was preceded in death by her parents Joao and Leopoldina Mateus, her husband Pedro Furtado as well as two brothers and five sisters and numerous other family members.

For last four years Ines had a wonderful group of caregivers care for her Jan, Mary, Martha, Brandie, Kerry, Sharon, Dusty, Betty Jean, Betty Lou and Wendy.

The family would like to thank Dr. Marcelle Mchan and the caring staff at Hospice.

A private family service was held March 5, 2021.
